ANTARA, Magelang. The process to reconstruct and rehabilitate the Mount Merapi area is expected to be finished in two to three years , Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said here on Saturday.

"Currently we are making a master plan for the rehabilitation and reconstruction process," said the minister.

He said public facilities and housing complexes in the area were severely damaged by cold lava flows from the eruptions of Mount Merapi last October 2010.

"Apart from bridges and roads, several sabo-dams are also in damaged condition. We expect to gradually repair the damaged sabo-dams because we have a limited budget," said the minister.

Meanwhile, Chief of Magelang district, Singgih Sanyoto, said cold lava floods had caused damage to 21 bridges.

The cold lava also carried away 129 houses in the district leaving other 307 houses severely damaged and 129 experiencing light damage. Five schools were also damage due to the disaster.

The 2,968 meters (9,738 feet) Merapi erupted on October 26 until November 30, 2010 that had left 350 people dead and at least 350,000 others had been made displaced.

The volume of cold lava entrenched on the upper parts of the volcano is estimated at least 140 million cubic meters, whereas the capacity of the infrastructure to tame the volcano downstream is only for 20 million cubic meters, according to the Public Works Ministry.

The cold lava makes it downward onslaught through 15 rivers (Putih, Blongkeng, Pabelan, Woro, Gendol, Boyong, Krasak, Batang, Senowo, Trising, Opak, Bebeng, Kuning, Apu dan Lamat) and from time to time have overflowed the rivers.

A total of 244 dams constructed to hold the smashing cold lava along the streams of the 15 rivers and most of the times can not function properly due to the huge capacity of the lava.
